Where academe has been beating me down, music has been picking me back up. Seriously y'all, the music world has kind of been killing it lately. Here are three new albums I downloaded recently.
London Grammar, If You Wait- "Wasting my Young Years" was the first song I heard (discovered through Youtube, I believe) and I knew within seconds of hearing her voice that I was going to download this album. It's kind of a mix of Florence and the Machine and Birdy. It's got a lot of the moodiness of Birdy but the power of Florence. Her voice has great body. Plus, this album makes for pretty good background music, so I'm loving listening to it while working.
Lorde, Pure Heroine- Lorde is blowing up right now, so you may have heard the hit "Royals" on an alternative radio station. One of the first things I learned about Lorde is that she's sixteen years old, but her album has an intelligence to it that kind of reminds me of Lana del Rey (not sound wise at all, but content wise). Her songs contrast what song lyrics and television/movies often portray as reality and what her and most people's experience of reality is. In "Team" she says, "We live in cities you'll never see on screen" and "I'm kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air." It's a little bit pop music and a little bit something else.
The Neighbourhood, I Love You. [Explicit]- If you haven't heard "Sweater Weather" on the radio yet, I don't know where you've been. Seriously though, I can only imagine that track is going to get more popular as the weather cools. This group has a moodiness and sound that I really dig, and the album is really easy to listen to.
I only need to find two more albums to meet my 24 Before 24 goal of downloading five new albums! What have you been listening to lately?
Yours Truly, Jen
